(Source: Saurabh Joshi Hindustan Times, New Delhi (MCT) — The Nagpada police on Tuesday arrested a 33-year-old married man who would use matrimonial websites to get in touch with women, and then con them into parting with their valuables. The police said that the accused has cheated at least 11 women by promising them marriage.
Zubair Mohamadali Moghul, 33, would claim the valuables by telling the women that it was his birthday, and that he would give them more expensive gifts after the marriage, the police said.
Jaydeep Gaikwad, assistant inspector of Nagpada police station, said, “The fraud came to light after a 28-year-old woman, a resident of Nagpada, approached us and lodged a complaint. We have secured his remand and are probing how many women he had targeted. Two more women have registered a complaint with us.”
Moghul had visited the woman’s residence in Nagpada’s Paras road area. When she went out to offer namaz, he stole a credit card and Rs5,200 in cash. The woman found out about the theft when she used her credit card for shopping, and filed a complaint. Vinayak Sawade, senior inspector of Nagpada police station, said, “We traced his location to Dongri area. We also received a tip off that he goes there to meet his in-laws every night and laid a trap. He was caught soon after.”
Preliminary probe has revealed that Moghul would scan matrimonial websites to target single women. After a few days of acquaintance, and promise of marriage, he would meet them and cheat them off their valuables. “After the woman gave away her gold chain or other valuables, he would flee and never meet her again,” Gaikwad added.
The police said the accused has duped at least 11 women, five of whom are from Navi Mumbai. The police said he is married and resides in Kurla.
The Nagpada police have registered a case against Moghul under sections 380 (theft) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs. 50) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in a local court that remanded him in police custody till Monday.
