National City Loan...Please help do you think it's possible

Hopefully I am posting in the right forum. Can anyone help with some information?

I am considering doing a loan modification on my own can anyone give me some advice if my modification is possible or if it is best to hire an attorney.

I have a 5 year arm that is do to come up for adjustment in Sept 2009. I would like to do a modification to fix my interest rate. I am employed but have had a reduction in my income. I also do have about 60K in equity in my home. I am also current on my mortgage. My goal is to see if they can just modify my loan to a fixed rate. I can not refinance because I do not have the income to qualify. I will not be able to afford my mortgage if my interest rate adjusts.

Please can anyone give me any information on the best way possible to achieve this. Can I do it on my own or should I hire an attorney? Or do you think that National City will do anything at all.
