Lawmakers Working on Billion Dollar Job Package

Reporting from Washington - Troubled by the rising jobless rate, President Obama and the Democratic majority in Congress are assembling a new jobs package that would devote billions of dollars to projects meant to put people back on payrolls in 2010 and keep them working.

Discussions over the scale of the bill are fluid, but lawmakers said the intent was to move swiftly and get a bill to Obama's desk as early as January.

The renewed push to create jobs is driven by a recognition that the $787-billion stimulus program enacted in February is not a sufficient remedy for an unemployment rate that stands at 10.2%.

Nearly 16 million people were unemployed as of October, and 3.49 million jobs have been lost since January, when Obama took office, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

If they're not competent enough to keep a person in a home that already exists, then it's safe to say they can't shit a job for us either, thats much harder to do. They just want to play us for ****ers again with another stimulus package, more parties at the White House and maybe we can start another war or two.

The only way we are going to get jobs is go over to Afghanistan and join the Taliban. Then the Gov will hire us.

The jobs issue requires serious discussion not rants.

The big bad boogy man "government" has nothing to do with the problems with HAMP it is a sound program vs the implementation by servicers.

The Stimulus program has worked to reduce taxes for 95% of Americans and create or save jobs.. can't quantify the numbers but zillions of teachers/police and many others. It is less than half spent so far and was never designed for the worse than expected economy.

But now we need solutions. I favor a jobs credit like in the 80s. But the Republicans will block anything.

Better yet, maybe the U.S. can build some Islands big enough to be seen from space and a rotating building or two like Dubai, that would put some people back to work. Na, we need to take over a couple more countries, priorities you see.

After all, we TOOK this country from the Indians, then we decided it wasn't big enough so we TOOK a nice chunk from the Mexicans, right? Why stop? Maybe some day another Country will come over and put our government in front of a firing squad, thats one way to stop the crooks. P.S. I hear we are a little short on protection here in the U.S. and we owe some people a shit-load of money.

Chinas middle class has been doubling every year for the last 10 or 20 years, all we have to do is move over there. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll come over here and take over our Government.

yes then you too can work 15 hours a day for less than minimum wage while living with your entire family five generations deep
but at least you'll be able to call yourself middle class.

I would say you need to read up on China, they are intentionally expanding their middle class. They have the right program, they know the middle class is necessary for China to survive. They are out buying Christmas presents and having a good time, we are the ones that are f*cked.

I'd also add of course some enforcement teeth in HAMP so a good govt program isn't screwed up by the servicers.

The difference between me and Beck is Beck wants our Government to quit borrowing, I want the exact opposite. I want to watch the people that have destroyed the middle class destroy themselves, and they are doing a mighty fine job! In the end we will get change. When the U.N. has to start supporting us they will stop the wars, our Government is way to stupid to do it on their own.

Ya, I got a little carried away last night. What I would like to see is the Gov pay us to go back to school. I would like to learn about residential solar and clean energy so I can start a business.

A mentor program would also be nice, someone that could help me get a business up and running the right way. I want to install residential solar and help people save money, clean up the environment, and make money at the same time. I live in the desert, it's sunny just about every day here and it doesn't make sense not to be solar.

Re: Lawmakers Working on Billion Dollar Job Package

Garry, great plan. I am looking for some sort of microenterprise grant. I'm a pet groomer, I haven't had my own place for that in a long time, I had been working for a couple other groomers, subcontracting but lost those spots last year. SO, started working off and on with the 2010 Census, had done census work in 2000. Anyway, I used my 08 tax return to buy equipment, BUT neither of the TWO people who wanted to partner up ended up having the money for a storefront rental-- nor do I.
Meanwhile, I have just about EVERYTHING to open up a shop. My current thinking is open it in my house, I'm zoned for cottage industries, just can;t do any boarding, but I could do pet grooming here. To do that would need 3k to plumb the tub into the basement/ septic. basement is walk out and partially finished, no heating source, down there, BUT, have an extra in to the chimney SO, wood stove down there would help a LOT, and I could supplement with an electric heater.

Then I would not end up having to pay rent elsewhere. I could afford to make up the money as slowly as it wants to come back, since I'm paying for my roof regardless. Just don't have the 4K I'd need to get it going. I am hoping in 2010, I get called to do more census work though and THEN I could put THAT towards the costs. Maybe get up and running by next Fall.
There are so many resources online I'll bet you could get the expertise you'd need, at least the basics over the Internet with one of your local community colleges?
And the idea of a mentoring program is great, except, I'd be afraid of drawing a bunch of incompetent consultants, after those with the skills to run and operate a successful business, are probably more interested in being your competition, than being your mentor AND those without the skills to do it, might have lots of extra time on their hand to mentor but is that help, helpful?

Where I live it is pretty depressed and there are already a bunch of pet groomers, but it is sort of like hairdressing or barber shops, people develop their preference for one person's approach and style, or another. I used to have a ritzy sort of shop, in another location, years ago, and I quickly built up a great client base, of repeating business, with people who scheduled in advance and tipped well. THIS place, won't support that sort of business. Here the first question will be "HOW MUCH?" SO, if I run it out of my house, they will LIKE the answer ; ) -- and I'm going to have to adjust to the idea of doing LOTS of dogs like Goldens and Labs, instead of little poodles and terriers, since around here, the larger family dogs are far more common. It isn't the best location for a grooming business, BUT, I'm sure I could have a great part time operation, and some sort of supplemental income, over time, who knows. Because this area is a lot cheaper than many in terms of housing prices, if the economy picks up, with the first time home buyers, starting to buy here... well MAYBE, it would end up being halfway decent. AND if nothing else, once I get it all set up, I might be able to enjoy grooming MY own dogs again. Hmmm, maybe I will start BREEDING poodles, there's a way to get some business. I knew a woman who did that, she was a great groomer, but in a rural place without much demand, beyond the once or twice a year bath dogs, she started breeding her OWN customer base! And she made a small fortune between the poodle sales and their returning to her when the pups needed grooming. I just don't like the idea of breeding more pets though, all of my pets are neutered/spayed and came from breed rescues. Maybe I'd do something with some of the locals, like the dog officer, I could do some basic grooming on the strays, and just ask to have them include a biz card. I think I stopped posting and started journaling here lmao.
