    Job outlook for 2010 grads

Job outlook for 2010 grads: Still stinks - Hiring for g raduates will remain near its lowest level in decades after 40% plunge last year, new survey says. But hiring will spike 15% at smaller companies.

It's a tough time to be starting a career.

This year has been extremely rough: New college graduates had 40% fewer job prospects, a new report shows. And the outlook for 2010, while better, is still not very promising.

Jobs for graduates with bachelor's degrees, which account for most new graduate hires, will drop nearly 1% next year, according to Michigan State University's survey on recruiting trends.

Survey says job market for 2010 graduates still gloomy - Nov. 17, 2009

When I hear guys like Beck talk about how lazy, spoiled, and useless our young people are it really burns me up. The reality is these kids are going in debt up to their ears trying to do what is right and we have nothing to offer them but debt when they graduate. They get to go work at McDonalds to pay back their debt.

I totally agree with you Garry. There are tons of students graduating college and just no jobs out there for them to turn to.

We have not seen anything yet for teens and college grads. We will have millions of grads out of work and with useless pieces of paper in the new economy.

You are lucky if you can get a job at McDonalds or Wal-Mart around here. Seriously.

What took years to destroy isn't going to fix itself overnight. We need to crack down on lop-sided free trade, Obama IS working on that. I don't think China is going to be so happy in the near future. Health care reform will also help bring the jobs back.

Today I was baffled to see how many people where at the grocery store, it was jam-packed on a Wednesday. This tells me that people are starting to wake up and not eating out anymore. When I first moved to this area the grocery stores where always dead.

    Good observations Garry.

Now I want you to check out what is in their baskets. The middle class now eat like the lower class with ramen and hot dogs you can see many older folks also) as their staples as the former lower tier upper class peeps are buying food they used to eat out and cooking it at home.

Also the 30th through the 4th or 5th of the month and the 15th-19th are always extra busy because people get paid usually on the 1st and 15th and wait for the check to clear to bring cash to buy food.

Some wait until midnight for these check and welfare to clear.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/09/bu...adco.html?_r=1

“There are families not eating at the end of the month,” said Stephen Quinn, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Wal-Mart Stores, and “literally lining up at midnight” at Wal-Mart stores waiting to buy food when paychecks or government checks land in their accounts.
I study the internet and the searches are increasing big time on food and all about learning how to cook at home and save money. Others are how to survive homelessness and the great depression.

I have noticed what's in their carts Moe, it's mainly only what is on sale and I've noticed the grocery store sales have heavily increased in my area. I'm also amazed at how many people use cards to buy food, I feel out of place using cash it's so ridiculous.

I've also noticed a lot more bulk buying of sale food items, Ramen noodles are getting harder to find in stock.

Re: Job outlook for 2010 grads

My youngest daughter is graduating from H.S. this coming June. She plans to go to college. She has some amazing skills in the area of sewing and garment design/construction. I have talked to her about taking a year before going to college to hone these skills working in an internship. I am thinking our children need to have a skill where they can make money with things they make or do with their hands in addition to learning academics. Those who can make money with their hands AND their minds will in the long run be in a better position....just my two cents. I have two master's degrees (art, so at least I know how to make and build stuff) and I am encouraging more young people to look into working with their hands in a skilled area. I'm wondering if anyone else is thinking along these lines?

That is so sick and sad. When I first went to college I could easily work part-time and pay my tuition/expenses and not go into debt. (I went to a state college). Later, when I went back for advanced degrees I had to go into debt even though I was working fulltime. (although I did get some grants because I'm teaching in an area of high need) What a rip-off. Yes, we have the best higher education system in the world from an educational stand-point, but we are making it impossible for our children to start their lives without crushing debt.

You know I feel for these kids Garry, but a degree is not the answer for everyone. Yes, it can open doors, but I know more people with degrees without jobs or un degree related jobs than I do that have jobs.

You will have to be in medical or something green related to make it with a degree.

This is a new economy. Game over for many who once thrived and think they are going to thrive in the future. Our economy will never be the same.

Here's a story you may get a kick out of Moe. One night many years ago I was coming out of a bar on Michigan Av., I'm walking down the street and I see six black guys circled around a white guy stomping and kicking the living shit out of him as he lay on the ground helpless. I thought to myself, shit they're going to kill this guy, I have to do something. I took a quick glance around for some back-up and the street was empty. I came to the conclusion that two against six was better odds than one, and I had to help this guy before they sent him to intensive care. Keep in mind I was brought up fighting and can hold my own pretty well, don't scare to easy. I was banking on the fact that this guy would have my back for having his. Guess what happened, I jumped in the middle and started swinging, the guy I was trying to protect got up and ran, now I'm fighting six guys on my own and there's no way in hell I can win. Before I knew it, I was on the ground getting my ass stomped! Just in the nick of time, the Detroit cops show up out of no-where and everyone scatters, including me. My ass got saved for doing the right thing and saving someone Else's. Still don't regret it.
