New Job Opportunity after mortgage lates

Hi All,

I am trying to change my current job. There might be a few opportunities. I am also in the middle of short sale my house. I have a few mortgage lates on the credit report. When the empolyers do the background check, do they always check credit as well? Are they going to turn me down just because my mortgage lates?

Please help...

Thank you

Re: New Job Opportunity after mortgage lates

They do not report unless its more than 2 months behind, but as for employer to credit check that would depend on what kind of job you seek, not all worry about your bills, usualy most important is a criminal check, and if thats clean then they consider you for employment, at least here on the East Coast

Now unless your so qualified for the Job but they have another person in mind, then they dig deep to get you disqualified for any reason, so then a credit check could do damage

Hello and good morning,
Employers check your credit report for many reasons one is to find out if employee has criminal background etc. It is against the law for employers not
to hire someone due to bankruptcy.

The link below will help you answer this question.

Hope this helps.

Re: New Job Opportunity after mortgage lates

Hi Mtg,

A prospective employer cannot do a credit check w/out your authorization (signature), so if you don't feel comfortable w/ the process, don't sign that form. Now, you probably won't be considered for the job, but at least you have control over the process. As Silly said, some employers probably abuse the process in order to screen folks out vs. in. Employers used to only do credit checks for security clearances, positions involving money, etc. But, I've read recently it's becoming more the norm for employers to do credit checks, even for jobs it does not make any sense to do a credit check for (non-money handling jobs). Studies have indicated that credit ratings have little correlation with job performance, overall. So, credit checks are an outdated tool and relied upon much too much by (less progressive) employers in their hiring process. I've also read that credits checks are used by some employers as a tool to discriminate against certain segments of the population (historically, African Americans, women). It provides legal justification to discriminate, in gen'l. So, my suggestion is that if you have to go through the stressful process, make sure you really want that particular job! If you really want a particular job, and agree to a credit check, keep in mind that it is ONE factor considered in the hiring process by prospective employers. I don't believe it's used as the SOLE reason to deny employment. You may want to forewarn and be honest w/ the prospective employer about your situation before they run a report. Honesty is always the best policy. If you don't get it, their loss, right ? Also, from what I understand, a credit score is not provided to prospective employers, just your payment history, outstanding debts, etc, overall financial history. As it's an employers' market, they are taking advantage of the unemployed masses by making everyone jump through unnecessary hoops, even for that run o' the mill job . Good luck!

Re: New Job Opportunity after mortgage lates

Mtg,
I agree with Iris that your employer or future employer does need your permission to check your credit report. If they hire another company to do a background check that includes it, they have to get your written permission first. But if you don't give them permission they will be wondering why. So it's best to tell the truth when applying for a job.

Your employer is not interested on your late mortgage payments, they are more interested about any recent criminal history, your identity, experience, your education, and your report and history can be found in your credit report. For example, if an employee is applying for a job that deals with money employers want to know if he or she bounched checks or any report that will give them an idea that this employee is not a good candidate for the job.

It is always a good idea to check your report at least twice a year. It will help and give you time to correct any errors on it. Having incorrect information in your credit report may prevent you from getting a job. By correcting it before someone check it will help you get a job or get a car loan etc. I did not know that CW reported to the credit bureaus that I still owed the 2nd mortgage. Good thing I've decided to check all the credit bureaus and I was able to dispute it and correction was made by CW and BA and it really helped me and my husband get a car loan even though I short sold my house. By disputing it, my husband's credit score went up from 634 to 698.

Hope this helps.
