At what point do we get a break?

I have had some questions answered on this forum, and I appreciate the help and concern. But I would like to explain what got us here, and hope that others will discuss that too. And to also ask, why are we, the consumers, the taxpayers, the people who are bailing business out, why are we getting the huge credit hits, losing our savings.. and business is not paying the same price??

My story...
We were married in 2001. We lived in CA, and hubby took a new job that offered a great income. I worked too of course and things were so rosey. In a short time, hubby was let go at this job. The person who was over him wanted his best friend to work there, and they hire hubby instead. So the person over him made horrible comments about hubby.. and who knows what really happend, but hubby lost his job.. I would guess age played a factor. Hubby could not find another good paying job without driving down the pass to L.A. and so we left Victorville.. off to S.C. Hubby landed a great job there, me an okay job. Within 6 months he was let go again, I found a better job... but we were losing ground, in a small city.. so we sold out and moved again. The healthcare cost was horrible in S.C. and we moved to GA. Again we bought a home, from the sale of ours in S.C.... and hubby got a great job. Within 6 months again he was let go, they cited an issue he was told to do by his boss, but then the whole place sold out that division.. so we think it was an excuse. He continued working off and on and landed another great job. We sold our home to move close to that job closer to Atlanta. That is when we got into our mess. I went to work as a receptionist at a mortgage broker. Hubby in sales and was doing fine. Just before we bought this home that became our rental home he lost his job. I told my broker but they flipped the loan over to a no-doc. loan. During this process Wells Fargo asked for a desk review, but the operations manager requested it to be waive because we had sold our home. I guess because he was laid off they flipped the loan at the last minute. In doing that not all the "findings" or conditions of Wells Fargo had be met.. So, we sold our home and with all the things loaded on our truck, we ended up in a hotel room while Wells Fargo held out for their desk review. Being a receptionist I knew little about loans. But what happened was explained to me by the loan processor there. The appraiser we used was one that Wells Fargo approved, and was also the brother-in-law to our operations manager. But wells fargo demanded a desk review. So, here we are paying for a hotel room with our pets boarded and not really understanding what has happened. so our operations manager contacts our Account Executive at Wells Fargo, and asks him to get the underswritter at Wells to waive the desk review. Which they do, and we move in. Sounds great, huh? Expect we did not know the area at all, the realtor never told us about the area, and the appraiser stated in the appraisal that the area was stable and growing. He did not included that the area was full of rental homes loaded with illegal alien families, nor did he include the fact that there were several homes foreclosed on, or the fact the area was losing value, at a time when homes were growing. After one year of being there, we knew we had been sold a bill of goods. By then, I had been trained to proceess and moved into that job, and I copied the findings and other docuements and figured out what had happened. I also started seeing that no one was explaining ARMs to people. While I did not have one because I had great credit I was concerned about that. Anyhow, we decided in a year and a half that we could nto live in that area it was dangerous and loseing value. So we listed it. the realtor told us right away that the price was too high on our appraisal by about 20,000.00 and values had not fallen yet. So, after two realtors, we decided to list and hoped for the best. We got a buyer and things looked really good. We found a home in MO, but held off waiting to sell our GA home. The offer came with inspections, and the inspector found termites, which we had a contract with a termite company to keep those critters from chewing on our wood. We had an inspector tell us the deck was not safe, in one and a half years after we bought it, and that siding should be replaced? I called our old inspector he said the new inspector was nuts, I called the terminte protection company and they said the termite inspector was nuts. Great.. now what? who wins here???? So, we made some deck repairs, but could not do 40,000.00 worth of repairs on a home and sell it for less that what we paid for it. During all of this our doorbell rings at 2 am and I am dealing with some one who can not speak english, the police show up and take a butcher knife from him. After that we have our old dog attacked, and our yard littered and drive by threats.. A guy even came up to our house one evening and threated us. We went thru several realtors and no one could sell it. They told us that we needed to get rid of our pets, and if the house were empty it might sell. We made the decision to move to MO, and sell our home in GA, so we saved the money to do that. We did nto want a rental home at all. We moved, the economy went south.. .we had to rent the place out and the bottom dropped out. We paid until we could not.. at first we had a management company that charged us and did not get a tennat for 3 months. then after we told them we could not pay for them anymore, they suddenly needed to do repairs, sent out their "company" to do the repairs, and deducted it from our rent. So we ended up for two months paying even more of the payments. Since Oct. of last year we have operated without a manager in GA... and it has been okay. But every month we had to pay extra. Hubby lost his job in October and has not found anything else really. I pay his healthcare with my little job and our expenses are paid to date. We have spent our 401K's , run up our credit cards, and now face ruining our credit all because we were mislead from the start. And we have no way to sue them to make this go away, as we the buyer should be ware.. yet they the business can tap us the taxpayer when they mess up?? The insurance in MO is not HMO, so the good ole 80,20 was sucking us dry.. and hubby had to have a ton of dental work done... getting old is fun. We can not use our insurance, all it is good for is to not lose everything if we get really sick... so we have decided to give that up next ... what good is it if you can not afford to go to the doctor unless it is an emergency anyhow? The hospitals here add interest on if you don't pay them in three months.. everything is all about how they can get richer.. they could care less that a large portion of American are suffering. They tell you to retrain.. but how can you? If you take classes you can not get unemployment.. hubby did sales, I guess he is too old, plus car sales are zip right now anyhow. Actually he did F*I and sales mangement, but here in MO they hire theirs friends instead of out of state people. He is trying very hard, it is hard to watch. But what else can he learn to make a living at almost 60?? Are we to just be a burden on society now? To live in a maytag box after working all our lives to now have nothing while we bail out businesses? We tried a short sale with Well Fargo but they lost he paperwork so many times for us and for our realtor that the buyer walked... who is responsible here? If we are to blame is not the system that allowed us to be ripped off also to blame? Was selling snake oil not banned back inthe cowboy days?? What is your story?? What got you to walking away?

We are not at late yet, this is our first month of not paying.. I am sure the calls will start right after the 15th. We have faxed in the request for a Deed in Lieu, but who knows in GA they can rip you off and get away with it.. We might be in for a real dunking and lose our cars and everything we just don't know yet.
