Student Loan default - then paid off

My wife's student loan went into default for around $1500. Between losing our house and some other things, we let it slip through the cracks a bit too long.

Once we got the default statement I decided to immediately pay it off (we had a small chunk of money at that moment). I couldn't get to an actual live body as it went to the State of California, some collection account for student loans or something.

After it was paid I got our free annual credit reports and saw that not only had they hit our credit for the 6 individual Stafford loans, the collection company and I believe the State also hit us. So my wife's credit is showing some 18 marks for the student loan.

Anyone have input on how or if its possible to get them to remove these now that we've paid it in full? This seems excessive, to say the least. True the debt had been default, but it was paid promptly after that.

I have thought of sending debt verification requests...but am wondering where to start to fix this.

I thought I'd bump this as I pulled our credit reports again and still show the loans multiple times. I'm not sure how this can be valid. My wife's report shows 5 accounts (separate loans) reported as CO from SLC (Student Loan Corp Trust) and 5 accounts (same ones as SLC) from ECMC CA (Educational Credit Management Company CA) as CO. These are the same accounts, so how can they both be reporting CO?

I'm still not sure where to come at this one. Previously I tried contacting the State, but never got a live person or even a good address to send anything to. I thought of disputing with the CRA, and possibly getting them all removed, but not sure the best way there either.

Any advice would be most helpful!

Have you maybe tried contacting the credit reporting agencies themselves to see if they can provide a starting place? Or maybe they can offer some sort of dispute mediation?
