Chinese Drywall FL Homes - Dr. Says "Get Out!"

GET OUT OF HOUSE WITH CHINESE DRYWALL, DOCTOR TELLS FAMILY

May 6, 2009

PARKLAND, Florida (CNN) -- Yorelle Haroush fled a million-dollar South Florida home this week, chased out, she said, by drywall made in China that's emitting vapors that smell like rotten eggs.

"It's making me sick. Physically, mentally and emotionally, making me sick," said the 18-year-old, who is pregnant with her first child.
Haroush lives with her aunt Amy Massachi and her four siblings and cousins in the house. They believe a year's worth of upper respiratory infections, antibiotics, bloody noses and sickness have been caused by the walls.

Their doctor said they need to get out of the $1.2 million estate in Parkland, Florida, northwest of Fort Lauderdale.

"I said, 'you can't stay there anymore, because you're sick every minute,'" the family's longtime physician, Dr. Ross Nochimson, told CNN. "They're sick on a weekly basis. Earaches, sore throat. I give them something, and they're sick again."

Massachi and her family are among homeowners in more than a dozen states who allege Chinese drywall has emitted corrosive gases they believe have given them health problems.

Homeowners also allege the gases corrode metal components including copper wiring, causing air conditioners and other household systems to fail.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says most of the complaints have come from Florida, where the concerns emerged last year. But consumers also have filed complaints in Louisiana, Virginia, Wisconsin, Ohio, Alabama, Mississippi, California, Washington, Wyoming, Arizona, Tennessee and Washington, D.C.

The Florida Department of Health says complaints it received -- more than 330 as of Tuesday -- generally involve homes built between 2004 and 2007.

A study done for the Florida health department by private laboratory Unified Engineering Inc. found that samples of certain Chinese drywall gave off a sulfurous odor from "volatile sulfur compounds" when exposed to extreme heat and moisture. It also found that vapors "in the residential atmosphere created a corrosive environment in the presence of moisture."
The health effects of those vapors are still the subject of several scientific studies.

Odors and corrosion are clearly evident in the Massachi house.
The pungent, rotten-egg-like smell permeates the two-story home. Throughout the house, electrical outlets are open to reveal black corrosion on the copper wiring. The air conditioning unit's air handler, inside the house, is blackened.

"This is disgusting. It's so corroded. I can't even believe it," Amy Massachi said in a raspy voice. "I can't breathe. Every morning, I wake up with sinus allergies, my voice is hoarse.

"My mother, when I call her up on the phone, she says, 'Amy, what's wrong with your voice?' and I say, 'allergies.'

"'What are you allergic to?' I don't know. Well, now I know. I'm allergic to my house. My house is making us sick."

The doctor recommends they vacate their 18-month-old home.
"Before they bought this house, they weren't calling every week with allergies and sore throats and ear aches and coughing," Nochimson said. "I don't know what more I can do for them."

Haroush, who after giving birth faces heart surgery for an unrelated condition, is moving in with her grandmother.
"I'm graduating this year, and I'm having a baby, and I don't need to be thinking about anything else going wrong, and any more stress that is on me," she told CNN.

Chinese drywall was imported into the U.S. during a different economic era, at the height of a housing boom. Prices were sky high, and the country was hit by two active hurricane seasons in 2004 and 2005, increasing the demand for home repairs.

Suppliers were forced to look elsewhere for their drywall supply. Drywall, made from gypsum, is regularly imported from Mexico and Canada, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, but during this time frame, the U.S. looked to China to make up for the shortage.
The Gypsum Association told CNN that enough drywall was imported from China to build 30,000 complete homes.

Most of the Chinese drywall, they say, ended up in southwest Florida during the housing boom, where it was used in new housing developments.

Some was also used in remodeling projects all over the country, so the number of homes affected is difficult to calculate.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission hopes to have more answers in the coming months. They continue to test the Chinese drywall, including controlled tests in chambers and real-world air sampling tests in homes, to determine how the drywall interacts with other elements in an average house.

"We don't deny there's a problem," spokesman Joe Martyak said. But there has been no positive link to adverse health effects.
"We don't know what it is that's causing the sore throats or bleeding noses. We have to find out what's causing the problem," he said.

The Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are doing studies on the health effects, but those examinations are some time away from completion.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is having ongoing conversations with Chinese officials, who will be sending a representative to the United States to study the problem.

"They appreciate the seriousness of the issue here and trying to be cooperative," Martyak said.
A handful of Chinese companies have been sued by homeowners and home builders.

In the meantime, homeowners like Massachi face financial hardship.
"Now, because they have to move out for health reasons, they're taking on a whole second (rent) payment," said Massachi's attorney, Michael Ryan.

Ryan said he's had no luck trying to convince Massachi's home lenders to suspend mortgage payments until the house can be made livable again.
He told CNN his clients are "having to make choices about their credit, and whether they are going to lose their home. But they're always going to pick their health first."

Massachi agrees. A good look at her blackened air conditioning coil was all she needed. She's looking to rent a new place.
"That's what I'm breathing in....I'm a little freaked out now, honestly," she said, her raspy voice cracking with tears.

"It can't be good, if that's what that looks like and it's pumping throughout my entire house," she said.
Eighteen months ago, Massachi says, she moved into her dream house, surrounded by family and friends. Now the dream is a nightmare.

"It's worth nothing," she said of the home. "It's exclusive. It's pricey, and now it's worth nothing."

Well, I think we should sue the Chinese dry wall people. Uh, oh no, on second thought, that would be counter productive seeing as they own all of our debt.

LOL Hmmmmmmm, although my house was built in '99 maybe I'll tell the banks the house was built with Chinese dry wall and that is the reason my kids have allergies and asthma. So here ya go Mr. Bank, take the house...just might wanna buy some face masks before you go in. I know where there is surplus from swine flu stockpiles. Good luck fellas.

Re: Chinese Drywall FL Homes - Dr. Says "Get Out!"

Please don't joke about this chefette. All of the kids and adults as well as some pets on my street living in these toxic gas chambers have been made chronically il by this. There are young children in these homes being diagnosed with emphasema, being rushed to the hospital with siezures, auto immune disorders and asthma.

Most on my street have been moved out by the builder now, however, many are not planning on moving back in because the builder is doing a half assed job, leaving behind and reinstalling cross contaminated materials. It's a mess, and the financial devastation goes beyond having a worthless toxic home. All of our furnishings have been cross contaminated and many personal belongings destroyed by the acid corrosion. Everything we all have, including aspects of our health, has been destroyed.

The saddest part is, there are far to many parents, who want to keep their homes and good credit, that are keeping their children exposed to these toxic fumes, while they wait for the government, or their class action law suits to do something to help them out.

It's all so screwed up.

We have over $200,000 of our own cash in the home, plus another $100,000 in furnishings and belongings that are all contaminated and useless. They sit in storage while we await someone to come up with a safe decontamination solution that actually works. It may never come though. This stuff is nasty.

To make sure, our children are not exposed again, we can't move back in when the builder is done with their half assed job, and most of us can not afford the mortgage and rent. We are facing financial ruin over this, when we can afford our mortgages and wanted homes to go the distance in.

Worse is that, one neighbor had a deeply discounted offer on their home, last January, with a contigency to close, after the builders remediation was complete. Well, the buyers bank refused to loan money on a remediated Chinese drywall home. So even "fixed" they are worthless on the market.

These families have been torn between choosing their physical health or their financial health. They can't have both.

A lot of foreclosures will be coming of this, many are already out there and some unfortunate people bought them it foreclosure auctions without the banks knowing about or disclosing the problem. That was from the first round of those who fled their sick homes, not knowing what the cause was.

Now people know, and one by one are being forced to flee for health reasons, and more of their homes will fall into foreclosure. At least the banks , that are brave enough to foreclose on them, are disclosing the problem now, if they buyers make them aware of the problem. Some banks now, do not want to take a truly toxic asset back and are not foreclosing on these toxic gas chambers.

In these pre foreclosure cases, the people do not want to keep their toxic homes. Because of cross contamination, and no one having a decontamination solution that works, they really need to be bulldozed for proper remediation.

Unless a miracle happens, we and many of our neighbors will not be going back, and will be facing foreclosure on unsellable homes in a recourse state, solely because, we want to keep our families safe.

It is much worse then what the media has been reporting.

Marshall, hibiscus8,
With all my heart I am sorry and in no way meant to belittle anything that you or other families are going through. When I first read the post I was angry and just another bs thing going on in this messed up country and just another thing home owners are getting hit with. Worst of all is that you seem to have no recourse in the situation? It is disgusting and I cannot tell you how much it does indeed hurt me to hear your story. I suppose like anything else, insurance does't cover such things, so now you own a home that is worthless.

I do and will continue to pray for you and the families struck by this awful mess. Please know that my 'joke' was done for my benefit in lashing out at what our government has done to this country and has yet again, left the homeowner holding the bag. Chefette

I don't think he/she did either.

I have seen joking around about it, around the net, and just wanted to let people know, that the wounds for those dealing with this, are still being cut, are very deep and wide open.

This toxic drywall is something that has brought people into facing foreclosure troubles who otherwise, would not have been. It's not something to wish for and these people will never be made whole.

No one is going to be removed from their mortgage obligations over this. At best, the government is trying to pass legislation, to force lenders to abate payments while these homes are being remediated or awaiting remediation, so the families can leave now for health reasons and while work is being done, and afford the temporary rent.

This is a problem because, we may be years off from fully understanding what form of remediation works, if any, other then bulldozing and rebuilding. Secondly, where are homeowners going to get the money for gutting a place down to the block, and refurbishing it with everything new, or bulldozing and rebuilding? Insurance is covering none of this problem for hoemowners, and most builders are denying any responcibility or have gone bankrupt or out of business. Any reward these people may get in a class action law suit, is years off coming and will be for pennies on the dollar, regarding their losses.

They also are dealing with the expenses of medical bills, and replacing contaminated furnishings and belongings. The best for them is that, they are screwed.

Anyway, these toxic homes and condos, current and more realistic estimates for the U.S. figures there are at least 300,000, will add a new dimension to the word, "toxic asset" for the banks, and to the re-sale/foreclosure market. It's been found in 41 states.

Florida realtors have created a special disclosure form for it.

Just be careful as you are out there looking for places to rent or are thinking of buying and bailing. The lady at my drycleaners, bailed on a healthy home that was under water and unknowingly bought a Chinese drywall home, that was in foreclosure and non disclosed.

Now her family is sick and her current home is worthless as she will have to disclose or face getting sued for non disclosure.

Many owners of these toxic homes, still do not know their homes are effected and are renting them out, or they know, and are just greedy and are renting them out without telling people.

Any new home or condo built between 2001-2008 is suspect. The easiest and best way to check for it is to cut the breaker switch, and pull off several outlet covers around the place, looking for copper wiring that has turned black. if you find blackening copper, don't move in, and let the owner know that they should have the place inspected for Chinese drywall, because of what you found.

Out of state owners who rent out investment properties, have no way of knowing.

If anyone is reading here who has it, just realize that your credit can be rebuilt. Damaged organs can not. If you have children, please get them out at any cost.

So much for the American dream.
It become a nightmare for so many.

Re: Chinese Drywall FL Homes - Dr. Says "Get Out!"

hibiscus8,

I am so sorry for what you and other families in FL (and other states) are experiencing re this devastating Chinese drywall tragedy. Truly enraging and very tragic. Thank you also for enlightening us more in depth to the true horror of the situation. It seem sometimes like there truly is no end to the abuse and devastation experienced by American homeowners today. All I can say is that I'm so sorry. I wish you, your family and the other families that are directly affected by the Chinese drywall tragedy the strength (long-term) and resources that are needed to fight the good fight against those responsible for putting homeowners and their families at such risk. Maybe if the media gets on it, the legal wheels will turn quicker ? I wonder why 20/20 or Dateline hasn't done an in-depth expose on this issue yet ? Maybe that's what's needed. More media exposure. Or celebrity advocacy ? How about Oprah ? She just might be interested in doing a show about it. Shoot her an email. Once Oprah is involved, folks listen. Any celebrities in FL that could expose it more? Celebrity endorsement to expose how children were/are put at such risk. Just some ideas. Good luck. Please keep us posted. We are pulling for you all.

Re: Chinese Drywall FL Homes - Dr. Says "Get Out!"

Chinese drywall??? Is this as bad as people are saying it is or are people over reacting? Asbestes, lead, mercury, etc were also big scares. but mostly overblown I think. I've been in construction 25 years and never heard of Chinese drywall. What is it and when did it start? I'm in the northeast and doubt it exists here or I'd have to have know. Can someone explain the basics of this or provide a link? Sounds interesting but I doubt it's that big a deal

Re: Chinese Drywall FL Homes - Dr. Says "Get Out!"

Thank You irish gal,

It has been in the national news. Good Morning America, CNN, Lou Dobbs, Fox, Inside edition, and such, has covered it. Not nearly enough as there are far to many people who still know nothing, or next to nothing about it.

Walking Away,

For some it's worse-much worse. Everyones sensitivity to the chemicals in these gases and exposure times, varies. People, especially healthy "20 30 somethings", who are away at work all week, and away at play on the weekend, have had little domestic exposure. Stay at homes moms and their kids, and retirees, who are in the homes more often, are showing the brunt of the exposure symptoms.

The reactions are real, yet different for everyone. Some are more severe and some, not so much and I explained why.

Remove the health concerns from this and you still have a big problem. These gases corrode away at metals in the home. Large builders , like Dragos in your area, and national home builder Lennar, are paying the expenses of moving families out, and gutting the homes over this. If it wasn't serious, they would not be spending this sort of money.

If you are in construction, you should know that no one should have to replace 8 rotted away copper AC coils, in the first two years of living in a new home. Copper wiriing, should not be black, corroding and shorting out within a year. This was the first problem, along with the smell, that started investigations into what was the cause.

Some Chinese manufacturing plants, were taking the toxic flyash off of coal fire power plant scrubbers and throwing it into the drywall as filler, before they neutralized the toxic chemcals. In short, this junkwall is loaded with the toxic waste from their coal plants.

It's also looking like the junk wall comes from plants, they took from the scrubbers where an inferior coal, with an even higher sulfur content was being burned.

Brand new appliances like refridgerators, dishwashers, and microwaves, have been failing within two years. Peoples brand new electronics, and computers are failing quickly from corrosion to the tiny copper components.

Their silver jewely, and collections are becoming blackened and pitted beyond repair. The homes are eating away at peoples things....and bodies. When these sulphur compound gasses meet up with moisture, that create sulfuric acid. It's why the AC coils, are taking the fastest repeated hit. The same thing happens, when these gases meet moist eyes, noses, throats and lungs. The tissues are being burned.

After about two years, new chrome fixtures in bathrooms and the backs of mirrors start to blacken, pit and corrode.

This is serious and disgusting. The damage is enormous if we are looking at about 300,000 homes and condos in the U.S. because we are dealing with a toxic gas, that can harm health, destroy personal property within the homes, property values, and cross contaminate and make toxic, anything porous in it's path.

Mind you, many in the construction business are trying to minimize it, because they are afraid of law suits. They should be if they are buying and using cheap toxic crap from China to build homes with. The people buying the homes have no way of knowing where the drywall was made. All of that info is on the back where you can't see it, and or painted over on the front.

Before this story broke locally in Florida, in late Dec 2008, and nationally in January of 2009, no one nor inspectors, had any reason to question where the drywall came from.

Links?

Do google searches on chinese drywall and hundreds of pages will come up now. It's in the Florida news pretty much every day. A lot was used here, and the effects were first noticed here because of our higher heat and humidity, which increases the releasing of these gases, along with the fact, we run our ACs more often and so the condenser coils are almost always wet.

BTW, in homes where freon was used, the freon was leeking inside of the homes to boot. At least we had Puron, to huff on along with the gasses, while 8 shot coils leaked dry of it into the house.

That compounds the problems for people, because once the AC system , leeks all of its coolant, the AC runs non stop creating high electric bills, and isn't cooling or dehumidifying the place anymore. That's when all hell breaks loose in a house, as the gases just ooze from the drywall in high heat and humidity.

I also knew when a coil went bad, after the experience with the first one, because my sinuses and head would come under an explosive attack, beyond the day to day suffering with the lower emmision levels. I use to want to blow my head off it was so bad.

Unless you have lived in one of these homes and watched your health and your families health deteriorate quickly, along with your things, I realize, this is difficult to wrap your head around. Most days, it is still difficult for me to wrap my head around what has been happening to us.

This is BS. We never should have come to having homes in the U.S. that were Made in China. It's disgraceful to this nation that we have come to this.

Yes, lots of the junk board came into New York Ports. It's been found in homes in NJ, Maryland, and mostly Virginia. Because of the northern climate, it has not been revealing itself as quickly up your way.

Most of it was shipped to the West Coast. Lot's of it came into Florida and Lousianna. It's been found in 41 states already.

Here is a mixed variety of a few links to help ground this in reality for you. If you do a google search, you will find hundreds of links.
