No suspicious assignments on the county recorder site. Mortgage not MERS?

After learning about MERS the other day, I went on their website and searched my property and nothing came up. I then went to my county's recorder website and searched the property and there were no suspicious assignments listed. The only recent assignment was from BofA to GreenTree which of course I knew about. Does this mean that my mortgage is not in MERS and didn't become part of the derivative debacle? I bought in 2002, refinanced in 2006.

    Hello UnderwaterinLV,

Have you checked to see if possibly Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae own your mortgage?

I went to the Fannie Mae link you gave me and punched in my address and received:

    Match Found.

Based on the property information you entered, Fannie Mae owns a loan on the property at this address.
Ok, so Fannie Mae owns the loan - what does this mean in the grand scheme of things? (By the way, thank you)

I am interested in this as well. Mine is Fannie, and there is no assignment recorded from the first servicer to the second. In my research, this may present a standing defense, if FC complaint is filed by the second servicer,, but I'm still studying.. I still don't understand the significance, if any, of mers..

Can someone tell me the significance of MERS or direct me to a thread that explains it?

Our mortgage WAS MERS until it was assigned to BONY 2 weeks after they told me the investor was BONY. I don't know the significance of any of that.

Was formerly Countrywide, funded in 2006.
