My loan is with GMAC but this is what i used. I originally had a $600 + deficit but the rep told me it was too high and he "helped" me lower it to $230 ish. Then he told me that would be accepted for a modification.

So, its true, you can't have a large deficit. I have seen people who are at 0 or at $100 on the plus side.
