Glad you found the forum and posted. I am sorry your father is going through this, and he's lucky to have you help him out. I'm sure there are alot of elderly folks who got ripped, and are now getting ripped again by the "loan mod scams and vultures"

Sending the hardship letter is a good first step to getting the process started...be prepared to send alot of other paperwork when things crank up.

The letter sounds good, I would send it certified mail so you have receipt of them getting it.
