questoin for the experts

Hello, I am new to this site and well I will tell me story.

Last year in 2007 was great, I graduated from college, landed a solid job, got marreid, and bought a house. Well, since then things didnt go as planned. My job was terminated by our governor this past July, but I got a new job in June. But my new job is out of town a ways and I was commuting back and forth. With gas being over $4 we decided to move the family closer to work and place our house for sale. It has been for sale for almost 6 months and I have been on time every month. My question is to you, things are getting a little tight because of owning 2 places and paying for heat and etc. for upkeep. Is there a possible way to ask for a deferment from Countywide for one month so we can have a Christmas? I have heard of people doing it before on car loans and etc. Also, my student loans are going to be coming due this month. What should I do?
