Be very careful. We were told the only way to get help was to stop paying our mortgage. After missing 3 payments they finally approved us for the MHA/Obama plan. We signed official MHA paperwork and made our 3 payments. We are still waiting for our final mod but so far the preliminary numbers they gave us are completetly different than what tehy told us they would be and are much higher than what we paid during the trial period.
Once you start missing payments they trash your credit scores as well. So now we have lousey credit and have no idea if and when we will ever get a real loan mod. If Chase and the other banks would just follow the MHA guidelines we would all be better off. Instaed they are spending all kinds of money to hire new people to process loan mods, but they don't train them properly, don't follow the MHA guidelines and end up creating more problems for all of us.
