Debt consolidation services
Debt consolidation services are basically the event of combining your current debts into one loan. Instead of struggling to keep track of your current responsibilities, you can consolidate your loans into one monthly payment that is to be paid to a certain creditor, at a single interest rate. Since this exercise may be overwhelming specifically to those who are in a world of trouble, these agencies have sprouted throughout the nation.
These consolidation agencies are there to provide debt-stricken individuals (and companies) with credit counseling, consolidation programs, management plans, resettlement options and the like. The consolidation service includes studying your current debt-income ratio, your spending patterns, how much you can realistically afford to pay monthly, and formulating a way to allow you to pay it off at a lower monthly amortization (and a slightly lower interest rate) but still provide you with a minimum living allowance. They will take the burden of negotiating with your current creditors for you so you can get a better deal. A fee will be charged for their services, of course. But in the end, when you are presented with the possibility of paying off your responsibilities and freeing you of stress (your creditors will no longer harass you because you now have a financial bodyguard), this fee may not even be an issue. If ever it is though, there are non-profit agencies you can check out.
Free services can be found anywhere and some financial experts will refer to this as credit counseling because their services generally consist of educating the consumer on how to manage their budget themselves. The reason they are referred to this is because a lot of companies advertise their services as free, when in reality they are going to charge some kind of fee for consolidating your loans. Most true non profits that absolutely charge no fee will do their best teaching the consumer how to make a monthly budget and also restore their credit rating.
Some schools of thought, however, warn you that you may be getting out of the pan and jumping straight into the fire when you consider doing this. Think about it, most consumers are in this position because of bad spending habits or emergencies that have caused devastating affects on their financial situation. So even if you enter into a consolidation plan, you still have not eliminated the problem (although it seems easier to manage now) because you have not even cured the sickness.
For individuals who just want to slowly bring their current debts down while managing their monthly expenses, it would be wise to check out a credit counseling agency. There are some agencies that will charge nothing at all for their services. One reputable credit counseling service that charges nothing for their services is Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS). These agencies will do their best to help the consumer on their path to financial freedom.
