Danville Gives Delinquent Taxpayers 30 Days to Pay Up

(Source: By Danville Register & Bee, Va. (MCT) Danville residents who are late paying their property taxes will be getting a delinquent notice in the mail this week, according to a news release from City Manager Joe King’s office.

As announced in June, the city has hired an outside collection agency to “aggressively pursue delinquent taxes and other amounts owed the city,” an initiative that was approved by Danville City Council on June 19.

Property owners will have 30 days to make full payment of late taxes, or risk having their accounts turned over to the collection agency.

“Delinquent accounts submitted to the collection agency will incur significant additional costs and fees,” said Barbara Dameron, the city’s director of finance. “Customers are urged to take advantage of this time period to resolve their delinquent tax obligations and to avoid these costs.”

On Monday, 4,518 delinquent notices were mailed. These notices represented approximately $2.8 million of delinquent real estate taxes.

Property owners can pay overdue bills online, by phone, mail or in person.

To pay online, go to www.-danville-va.gov. To pay by phone, call (888) 918-1140. Bills paid by mail should be sent to City of Danville Central Collections, P.O. Box 3308, Danville, VA 24543. To pay in person, go to Central Collections office, which is located in the Charles H. Harris Financial Service Center at 311 Memorial Drive.

Payment at the Central Collections office can be made by cash, money order or cashier’s check. Credit cards and debit cards can be used to make payment online or by phone, but they cannot be used to make payment at the Central Collections office.

When making payment online, an added processing fee is charged because this service is provided by a third-party vendor. This fee goes to the vendor, and not the city, for processing the payment.

Property owners who believe they have received a delinquent notice in error are asked to contact Central Collections at (434) 799-5125.
