Consolidate student loans and credit cards

Most kids nowadays go to college right after getting out of high school but some wait a year or two before going. Regardless of when you go, you are going to rack up some debt because going to college is not free. Even with a scholarship, you can still rack up debt for living costs and even driving to and from college each day.

Debt is debt and it does not matter if it came from your school work bills or from a car payment, you are still going to have to pay it off. You probably have several credit cards with debt on them and maybe a few loans at a bank. Having a lot of credit cards each with money due on them can really be a pain.

Many people have to file bankruptcy each year because of too much debt and having several credit cards with debt on them does not help the matter at all. What happens is people keep on charging to the credit cards and making the minimum payments. Before long, they realize that they can no longer afford the payments as they keep rising. This can happen quite fast if you do not watch out what you are spending.

One way to manage your debt is to consolidate student loans and credit cards into one big loan. Paying interest on 5 or 6 loans really eats into your money and makes paying off debt that much harder. When you consolidate your money into a big loan, you pay one interest rate and you pay just one bill. It can be easy to miss paying a bill if you have several each month. Consolidating your loans makes paying your bill simple and easy.

After you set up all your debt on a consolidated loan, you must set a budget. If it is not needed really badly, then it should not ever be charged to a credit card. Get rid of all the credit cards you have but one and only use that credit card in case of emergencies. If you like paying with a credit card, make sure you have the cash ready to pay it back that month so that you do not have to pay interest.

Treat your credit card like a debit card and always have the money ready to pay back if you are going to charge anything to it. Once you get into control of your finances, your life will be a whole lot better and you can then focus more on your school work.
